President Macron: Indonesia a Strategic Indo-Pacific Partner
President Macron stated that Indonesia is a strategic Indo-Pacific partner and expressed confidence that President Prabowo shares this belief. During President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to the Élysée Palace in Paris on Thursday (28 May), Macron affirmed France’s commitment to strengthening strategic ties into a global partnership across various sectors.
In a joint statement, Macron highlighted Indonesia’s importance as a key strategic partner for France in the Indo-Pacific region. He noted the recent arrival of the first Rafale fighter jets in Indonesia as tangible evidence of the evolving strategic relationship, stating: ‘The arrival of the first Rafale jets yesterday is proof of this relationship and today’s discussions, and a sign of our shared desire to continue progressing along this path.’
Macron expressed hope that the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement would be implemented soon to accelerate trade and investment flows in strategic sectors such as transport, healthcare, energy transition, and defence. He also welcomed Indonesia’s opening of its market to French dairy and beef cattle sectors, and praised Danantara’s investment plans as part of economic cooperation.
On cultural and educational fronts, both leaders committed to deepening collaboration, building on the cultural strategy declaration at Borobudur Temple in May 2025. This includes museum partnerships, literature, film, fashion, and strengthened scientific, technological, and university collaborations under the 2026 France-Indonesia Innovation Year. Macron stated: ‘France aims to welcome more students, researchers, and talents.’
Regarding international issues, Macron and Prabowo discussed the Middle East situation, the Ukraine conflict, tensions in the South China Sea, and Southeast Asia. Macron praised Indonesia’s active role in promoting peace and international dialogue, specifically commending Prabowo’s ‘courageous stance on Middle East peace and Palestine recognition’ and ‘your military’s involvement in safeguarding Lebanon’s sovereignty through peace efforts.’ Macron affirmed ASEAN’s importance in France and the EU’s Indo-Pacific strategy, pledging continued cooperation with Indonesia to address global and regional challenges.
