President Approves Urea Exports to Australia, This is Indonesia's Fertiliser Supply Readiness
JAKARTA — President Prabowo Subianto received a telephone call from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to discuss the approval of Indonesian urea fertiliser exports to Australia amounting to 250,000 tonnes in the initial phase as part of strengthening trade cooperation.
“In that communication, PM Albanese expressed appreciation for the President’s approval regarding the export of Indonesian urea fertiliser to Australia amounting to 250,000 tonnes in the first stage,” said Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in Jakarta on Tuesday (21/4/2026).
In addition to Australia, the Indonesian government is also planning to export urea fertiliser to several other countries such as India, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brazil. The total commitment for urea fertiliser exports reaches approximately one million tonnes, which is part of efforts to expand the global market for national fertiliser products.
Based on data from the Minister of Agriculture, the total national urea production is recorded at 7.8 million tonnes, while domestic needs are around 6.3 million tonnes. With this production surplus, the government assesses that exports can still be carried out without disrupting the availability of fertiliser domestically.
“This step is expected to maintain domestic supply resilience while strengthening Indonesia’s contribution to the global market,” said Teddy.
Moreover, this policy is also part of the government’s strategy to increase the added value of the fertiliser industry sector and expand economic cooperation with various partner countries.
PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero) has assured the readiness of supply and production to support the government’s plan to export urea fertiliser to Australia. This was stated in response to President Prabowo Subianto’s decision, which has approved the plan to export 250,000 tonnes of urea fertiliser to Australia.
“We assure readiness from the production and supply side to support the government’s plan. The capacity we have is sufficient to meet domestic needs while capturing export opportunities,” said the President Director of Pupuk Indonesia, Rahmad Pribadi, on Wednesday (22/4/2026).
Rahmad stated that Pupuk Indonesia’s urea production capacity reaches 9.4 million tonnes per year. In 2026, production is projected to reach 7.8 million tonnes, with estimated domestic needs of around 6.3 million tonnes.
