The Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has appointed Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia as chair of the Energy Transition Acceleration Task Force. Bahlil said the government continues to provide universal energy access. In a limited meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta, the President ordered acceleration of clean and renewable energy implementation, including solar power plants to be provided for schools and villages. ‘We just finished a limited meeting with the President, which discussed the implementation of clean and renewable energy. It includes the 100 gigawatt (GW) program for solar PV and renewable energy,’ Bahlil said at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday (5 March 2026). To accelerate the realization of the clean energy transition, the President formed the task force by appointing Bahlil as its head. According to Bahlil, the formation of the task force aligns with the government’s efforts to implement energy transition while reducing subsidies. ‘The orientation is that the energy transition can be faster, but we can also reduce subsidies. Because by converting from diesel-fired plants to solar PV, that will lead to efficiency in subsidies and at the same time drive faster use of electric motorcycles and cars,’ he added. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) also promotes the use of solar PV to accelerate electrification on remote islands. This effort is part of the government’s strategic program to improve energy availability and expand energy service delivery to hard-to-reach areas. Not only the acceleration of solar PV development, according to Bahlil, the President also asked him to optimize the conversion of fossil-fuel powered motorcycles to electric motorcycles. Gradually, the government will convert 120 million motorcycles in 3 to 4 years ahead. ‘The President has a strong desire for the implementation to be carried out quickly and, God willing, we will do it within a short period. The President previously stated that it could be 3 to 4 years, or even faster,’ Bahlil said.
