Preserving City Aesthetics: Jakarta Municipality Beautifies Dozens of Bridges in Matraman
Jakarta - The Road Maintenance Implementation Unit (Bina Marga) is beautifying dozens of bridges in the Matraman district (East Jakarta) as part of efforts to maintain city aesthetics.
“To date, we have already repainted 21 bridges and the process continues,” said Nessy Octavia, Head of the Bina Marga Implementation Unit for Matraman District, when contacted in Jakarta on Saturday.
The repainting work has been ongoing since early January 2026 to ensure conditions remain well-maintained whilst providing comfort for residents who cross these bridges daily. “We are targeting completion by mid-March,” she said.
The repainting initiative represents an effort to maintain infrastructure quality, which the Matraman District Bina Marga Unit continuously pursues. Additionally, repainting forms part of routine maintenance to prevent bridge structures from deteriorating rapidly due to exposure to heat and rain.
The repainted bridges are distributed along Kali Baru and Kali Utan Kayu (also known as Kali Namru), which serve as inter-neighbourhood connecting routes. These include locations on Jalan Balai Rakyat, Jalan Galur Sari Timur, Jalan Kelapa Hijau, and several other points such as Jalan Utan Kayu Raya and Jalan Pisangan Baru Utara.
According to Nessy, bridges play a vital role in supporting residents’ mobility, whether for work, school, or economic activities. Consequently, periodic maintenance is prioritised to keep public facilities in proper working order.
“With the involvement of five personnel from the Yellow Squad, repainting is carried out in stages without disrupting community activities,” she said.
The authorities hope that this routine maintenance can extend the lifespan of bridges whilst creating a more orderly and comfortable environment in the Matraman area.
