Preparing for Safe and Comfortable Lebaran 2026 Homecoming: BKI and Transport Ministry Conduct Spot Checks on Passenger Ships
Jakarta, VIVA – PT Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero), known as BKI, and the Directorate General of Sea Transport under the Ministry of Transport have conducted seaworthiness spot checks on Lebaran 2026 passenger vessels at the Main Harbourmaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP) in Makassar.
BKI President Director R. Benny Susanto said the exercise was carried out to ensure that passenger ships serving the homecoming rush meet safety standards and are operationally ready.
He explained that the seaworthiness checks involve direct inspections of vessel conditions, including the physical hull, engines, safety equipment, and other supporting facilities.
“This measure aims to ensure vessels are in seaworthy condition before carrying passengers during the Lebaran 2026 homecoming period,” Benny said in a statement on Friday, 20 February 2026.
He added that BKI’s participation in the exercise reflects the company’s commitment as a provider of maritime survey and classification services to ensure that the inspection process complies with prevailing regulations.
“Through these spot checks, inspections cover not only document completeness but also direct verification of safety equipment and the technical readiness of vessels,” he said.
Benny stated that the inspections are conducted to prevent potential negligence in ship operations and to ensure vessels can operate safely, including during the anticipated surge in passenger numbers over the forthcoming Lebaran 2026 period.
Beyond technical aspects, the inspections also cover the readiness of public facilities and vessel cleanliness to support passenger comfort. These efforts are expected to provide a sense of security for the public travelling home by sea transport.
BKI reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its support for maritime safety and security oversight through technical assistance and objective inspections, in order to minimise accident risks and maintain sea transport safety standards in Indonesia.
Through technical assistance and objective inspections, BKI continues to support maritime safety oversight to minimise risks and uphold national sea transport security standards.
“Let us work together to achieve a safe, comfortable sea homecoming journey, arriving safely at our destinations,” he said.
