Pramono's Strategy to Address Waste Landslide at Bantargebang ISWM Facility
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has prepared several measures to address the landslide incident at the Bantargebang Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) facility in Bekasi City.
These efforts are being undertaken to ensure that Jakarta’s waste management operations remain safe whilst preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.
As reported, a landslide occurred in zone 4A of the Bantargebang ISWM facility on Sunday, 8 March 2026, killing seven people.
The Jakarta Provincial Government immediately implemented several mitigation measures.
Waste unloading operations have been diverted to other zones within the facility.
Pramono has ensured that the shipment of waste from Jakarta to the Bantargebang ISWM facility is also being minimised.
“As a mitigation measure, services in zone 4A are temporarily closed. Waste shipments to the Bantargebang ISWM facility are being minimised, with operations diverted to zone 3,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Monday, 9 March 2026.
In addition to utilising zone 3, the Jakarta Provincial Government is also preparing two new temporary zones.
He acknowledged that the incident has impacted waste shipments from Jakarta, which have historically reached approximately 7,400 to 8,000 tonnes per day.
Therefore, these new zones have been established as a temporary solution whilst the handling process in zone 4A is completed.
“Two new sites are being prepared whilst things are being tidied up,” he said.
“There will certainly be an impact. And for that reason, we will implement a sorting process at the endpoint. And at the same time, to ensure that not everything is sent to Bantargebang,” he stated.
According to Pramono, the current capacity of Bantargebang is already severely limited, making it necessary to reduce dependency on the facility.
