Jakarta Governor Pramono has urged the newly sworn-in Jakarta Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) to crack down on beggars frequently seen in public spaces during Ramadan, arguing that their presence does not reflect Jakarta as a global city.

Speaking after the swearing-in of 521 functional officials at City Hall, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, Pramono said: ‘We will ask them to take firm action against beggars in Jakarta. That does not reflect the city as a global city.’

During enforcement, Satpol PP should work professionally without discrimination. ‘I want to call on and urge all ranks of the Civil Service Police to carry out the enforcement of regional regulations with a firm yet humane, professional, and non-discriminatory attitude,’ he said.

Pramono also asked Satpol PP to maintain public order and the tidiness of the city consistently, including ensuring sidewalks remain a safe and comfortable space for pedestrians.

For him, the public-space orderliness is one of the key indicators in building Jakarta’s image as a well-ordered, modern, and competitive global city.

One of the steps taken is to open workspace through the PJLP programme. He noted that the education requirements to become field officers, such as the ‘orange troops’, have now been relaxed.

‘PJLP, which used to require SMA for the orange troops, now only requires primary school (SD). This is one of the breakthroughs we have made to give everyone the opportunity to work in Jakarta,’ Pramono said.
