Pramono to Tighten Waste Sorting to Prevent All Rubbish Being Sent to Bantargebang
JAKARTA — The Jakarta Provincial Government will tighten its waste sorting system to prevent all rubbish from the capital being sent to Bantargebang Final Disposal Site (TPST), Bekasi, West Java.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that this measure aims to reduce the burden on the final disposal site, which has increasingly limited capacity.
“To do this, we will implement a sorting process at the end point,” said Pramono at Jakarta City Hall on Monday, 9 March 2026.
The capital generates 8,000 tonnes of waste daily, placing immense pressure on the final disposal site’s capacity, necessitating a gradual reduction in volumes.
Consequently, the Jakarta Provincial Government will begin strengthening waste sorting systems both at source and at processing locations.
This policy also aligns with guidance from the Ministry of Environment for local governments to improve waste management before disposal to landfills.
“At the same time, to ensure not all waste is sent to Bantargebang, because Bantargebang must begin implementing restrictions given its very limited capacity,” Pramono said.
Meanwhile, the Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing a waste processing facility in the RDF Plant Rorotan area, North Jakarta.
The facility is targeted to process approximately 1,000 tonnes of waste daily.
Previously, a waste pile in zone 4A of Bantargebang landfill collapsed on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
The incident occurred around 15:29 Western Indonesia Time when several trucks and workers were operating in the area.
The collapse resulted in four deaths as workers were buried under the waste landslide.
