Pramono to Implement Waste Sorting in 153 Jakarta Pasar Jaya Markets
Pramono made the statement during an inspection of organic waste processing at Kramat Jati Market in East Jakarta on Monday (11/5/2026). He said that all markets under Pasar Jaya’s management would adopt a similar waste management model to reduce the burden of waste transport to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST).
“Pasar Jaya manages 153 markets, and almost all markets in Jakarta are handled by Pasar Jaya. We will apply the same approach,” Pramono said at Kramat Jati Market.
Pramono explained that markets managed by Pasar Jaya currently contribute around 500 tonnes of waste per day to Bantargebang. Therefore, waste processing and sorting at the market level is expected to significantly cut the waste volume.
At Kramat Jati Market itself, Pramono noted that approximately 5 tonnes of waste are produced daily. In the future, organic waste processing will be carried out through partnerships with private entities and state-owned enterprises to produce beneficial products, including organic fertiliser.
“Today, as a follow-up to the waste sorting programme we launched previously, the DKI Jakarta Government through Pasar Jaya will collaborate with communities concerned about waste handling, particularly organic and inorganic waste,” he stated.
Pramono said the results of organic waste processing could be used for landscaping needs up to fertiliser. According to him, there are two types of processing outputs currently being developed: liquid fertiliser and compost.
“The organic waste can serve as fertiliser. As we saw earlier, there are two types: one in liquid form and the other as compost, which can become organic fertiliser,” he said.
Not only markets under Pasar Jaya, but the DKI Provincial Government will also apply a similar policy to non-Pasar Jaya markets. Pramono mentioned that the Environmental Agency would be asked to coordinate waste sorting in those markets.
“Whether Pasar Jaya or non-Pasar Jaya, they remain responsible for waste management through sorting at the market level,” he clarified.
When asked when the policy would be implemented, Pramono assured that the programme would start soon.
“Starting now. If this year is too long,” he added.
