The central government is proposing the implementation of work from home (WFH) for one day per week to curb fuel oil (BBM) consumption. The Jakarta Provincial Government has responded to this initiative. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that his administration will fully follow the policy decided by the central government. He emphasised that the provincial government has not yet taken any technical steps because the final decision on WFH twice a week has not been issued. “So, the Jakarta Government will follow whatever the central government’s decision is. Whatever is decided, we will implement it. But since it has not been decided, we have not taken a stance on it,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday (25/3/2026). This policy follows President Prabowo Subianto’s directive emphasising the importance of energy conservation, particularly amid the Middle East conflict impacting global oil prices. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto explained that the government is opening options for work flexibility with a WFH scheme for one day in five working days. “Then, the last point regarding the study is that with high oil prices, efficiency in working hours is needed. Flexibility for work from home will be opened. One day in five working days,” Airlangga said. Airlangga mentioned that the policy will be implemented after Eid al-Fitr 2026. However, the exact timing is still under discussion. “Post-Lebaran, but we will determine the timing later,” he stated. The government is currently preparing the concept and technical implementation before officially announcing it to the public. WFH is not only aimed at civil servants (ASN) but is also expected to be adopted by the private sector and local governments. “The technical details are being prepared, as this is expected not only for ASN but also for the private sector and local governments,” Airlangga clarified. This policy is considered capable of providing significant impact on energy savings. By reducing daily mobility, the government estimates that BBM consumption can be reduced by around one-fifth of normal usage. “There is savings in terms of what, the use of mobility for petrol, the savings are quite significant, one-fifth,” he said. Nevertheless, the implementation of this WFH policy will still be adjusted to global developments, particularly geopolitical conditions and world oil prices.
