Pramono says construction of tram in Old Town is still under study
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said that the plan to build a tram in the Old Town area, West Jakarta, is still in the study stage. “For the Old Town tram, what was stated by the Deputy Governor certainly needs to be studied further,” Pramono said in East Jakarta on Tuesday. Pramono explained that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is still prioritising the completion of the MRT Lebak Bulus-Kota project, targeted for completion in early 2029. He is optimistic that the presence of integrated transportation will bring the historic area back to life. “Because once that’s done, the KRL will run, the MRT will run, TransJabodetabek or TransJakarta will run to Old Town, I’m sure Old Town will become a new place that will be visited by the public,” Pramono stated. In addition to the MRT, the DKI Provincial Government also plans to develop TransJakarta bus routes connecting Old Town with areas outside Jakarta. This transport integration is seen as key to increasing the attractiveness of the area. Pramono emphasised that with easily accessible transportation, Old Town can become a flagship tourist destination. “In particular, we are preparing Old Town to attract tourism,” said Pramono. Previously, Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno revealed plans to build a tram as part of the major revitalisation of the Old Town area. The tram is designed not only as an icon but also as an environmentally friendly transport solution in the heritage area. Rano said the tram concept has been included in discussions by the revitalisation team, particularly to support Old Town as a low-emission area. “Indeed, one of the goals is to reduce emissions. We are discussing plans to build a tram in Old Town,” Rano said.
