Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has said that peak traffic hours in the capital shift during Ramadan. Jakarta’s usual evening congestion moves to the afternoon as a result of residents purchasing takjil for breaking their fast.

“We have been coordinating with the police, with the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, to manage this. Particularly during the afternoon hours approaching the time for breaking the fast,” Pramono said at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday (19/2/2026).

Additionally, on regular days before Ramadan, traffic congestion typically occurs from 06:00 to 07:00 Western Indonesian Time. However, during Ramadan, the morning rush hour tends to shift later.

“In the morning there is a shift — previously at 06:00 or 07:00 the roads would already be busy, but now it’s at 08:00, 09:00 and so on,” he said.

The Jakarta Transportation Agency has been asked to prepare anticipatory measures to ease congestion, particularly at points that frequently become locations for impromptu takjil sales.

“We are coordinating — yesterday I also asked the Transportation Agency to prepare for this, because this is a routine matter that we deal with every year,” he added.

Similarly, the Head of Operational Guidance at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Traffic Directorate, Police Commissioner Robby Hefados, explained that morning rush hours are likely to shift later due to more flexible office start times. Morning peak traffic is predicted to occur between 09:00 and 10:00 Western Indonesian Time.

“Of course, with the government’s policy of implementing work-from-anywhere arrangements, as well as office activities starting later in the day, the movement of traffic is likely to shift to between 9 and 10 in the morning,” Robby told reporters on Wednesday (18/2).

Meanwhile, afternoon rush hour shifts earlier due to earlier office departures. The shift in afternoon congestion during Ramadan begins from 14:00 to 15:00 Western Indonesian Time.

“In the afternoon, it is very likely that because many people want to break their fast together with family and relatives, there will probably be an increase in vehicles heading towards Bekasi and the southern areas from around 2 or 3 in the afternoon,” Robby said.
