JAKARTA — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has proposed that the pedestrian overpass (JPO) in the MH Thamrin area be connected directly to the Sarinah shopping centre.

According to Pramono, integrating the JPO with the commercial building has the potential to deliver dual benefits: facilitating pedestrian mobility whilst supporting economic growth in the area.

“I discussed this with the Development Assistant to explore whether they are willing to continue this and enter Sarinah. Because if this can enter Sarinah, it would also benefit Sarinah,” Pramono said at the JPO site on Monday, 2 March 2026.

“We have actually already offered to connect the JPO directly into Sarinah. However, Sarinah is heritage, a cultural conservation area. So they still want to preserve that,” he added.

Pramono stated that he has instructed the Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) to continue discussions with Sarinah’s management to find the best solution.

According to him, public accessibility still needs to be improved without neglecting the historical value of the building.

Currently, the JPO in the area has been revitalised. The JPO, described as one of the first in Jakarta, is now more accessible for persons with disabilities as it is equipped with lifts and tactile paving (guiding blocks) on the pavement.

Welfizon, Chief Executive of Transjakarta, explained that the JPO improvement is part of a programme to revitalise bus stops and comprehensively manage the pedestrian area.

“So in May there will be a pavement widening of approximately 2.6 metres, so that pedestrian access will have more space,” Welfizon said.

The Jakarta Provincial Government hopes that the integration of the JPO with Sarinah can be realised so that multi-modal connectivity and access to economic activity centres in the area becomes increasingly optimal.
