Pramono Opens Possibility of Adding More Groups Entitled to Free Public Transport in Jakarta
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has opened the possibility of increasing the number of community groups receiving free public transport facilities in the capital. The proposal emerged amid plans to adjust service tariffs for Transjabodetabek, which are currently under review. Pramono emphasised that the tariff policy would continue to consider the public’s financial capacity. Concurrently, subsidies will be directed to be more targeted towards groups in need. “In fact, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will continue to campaign for Jakarta residents across 15 categories, and we will possibly add more categories, and we will make them free. Because the cross-subsidy must be fairer; for those who cannot afford it, it is free,” Pramono said after inspecting a former BPSDM site in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Thursday (11/6/2026). According to Pramono, residents with better economic means will later be able to pay slightly higher tariffs to support this cross-subsidy scheme. “For those who can afford it, they pay a little more,” he remarked. Pramono also corrected the assumption that all Transjabodetabek service tariffs would rise to between Rp 10,000 and Rp 15,000. He stressed that not all routes would experience such tariff increases. “It appears as though Transjabodetabek will rise by Rp 10,000 to Rp 15,000. It is true there will be a price adjustment, especially for several long routes that require additional services,” he explained. He cited the service to Soekarno-Hatta Airport, which incurs various additional operational costs, including parking fees at several points. Additionally, there are long-distance routes, such as to Bogor, which require tariff adjustments. Nevertheless, Pramono assured that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government would continue to pay attention to residents’ purchasing power before setting new tariffs. “But not all Transjabodetabek increases will be high. Because in any case, as governor, I also consider the community’s capacity under current conditions,” he said. Pramono stated that the new tariff amounts were still being finalised and would be announced in the near future. He hopes this policy will still encourage people to switch to using public transport without burdening low-income groups. “Regarding the exact figures, we will announce them in due course, in the near future,” he added.
