Pramono Inspects Dredging of West Flood Canal: Strategic Project to Tackle Flooding
Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, directly inspected the dredging of the West Flood Canal in the Kebon Melati area, Central Jakarta. He emphasised that this project is one of the most strategic points for preventing flooding in Jakarta, particularly because its location is the meeting point of the Ciliwung River and Krukut Canal flows.
“This is a very, very strategic location for addressing Jakarta’s flooding issues. This is where the Ciliwung and Krukut meet, and dredging has not been carried out for quite some time,” said Pramono in Kebon Melati, Central Jakarta, on Friday (10/4/2026).
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government targets the dredging to be carried out over one year, with an excavation volume of 178,000 cubic metres along 3.8 kilometres. Pramono stated that the canal’s long-neglected condition has led to some areas being repurposed by residents into fishing ponds and fish farms.
Therefore, he has tasked the Mayor of Central Jakarta and the Water Resources Department (SDA) to ensure the project proceeds without obstacles. “It must not fail, it must not be delayed,” he asserted.
In addition to this dredging, the DKI Provincial Government is also preparing normalisation at several other points, such as the Ciliwung, Krukut, and Old Cakung. These efforts follow the BMKG prediction that rainfall will decrease from mid-April to September, providing an opportune moment for major works.
“If this is successfully dredged, the water flow to the sea will be faster. But if there is tidal flooding, it will still be a problem,” he said.
Regarding the waste from the dredging, Pramono mentioned that most of it will be transported to a stockpiling point in North Jakarta. Further coordination, he added, is being carried out with the DKI Provincial Government’s Development Assistant.
