Pramono inaugurates domestic wastewater management system to improve sanitation in the Thousand Islands
Jakarta — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo inaugurated a Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPALD) on Pramuka Island during a visit to the Thousand Islands on Friday.
The construction of the SPALD system, he said, aims to improve sanitation and environmental quality on Pramuka Island, which is home to approximately 2,200 residents.
“I have inaugurated the facilities for the Domestic Wastewater Management System (SPALD) and I have observed directly that the quality is very good,” said Pramono on Pramuka Island, Thousand Islands, on Friday.
The official, commonly referred to as Pram, expressed hope that the construction of the SPALD would benefit the island community in maintaining health and environmental cleanliness.
There are five existing zones of wastewater treatment installations (IPAL) constructed in 2012-2013 with a total capacity of 195 cubic metres per day. However, based on field inspections, IPAL zones 2 and 3 were found to be serving beyond their intended capacity.
IPAL Zone 2 has a capacity of 113 service units (SR) but serves 245 SR, whilst IPAL Zone 3 has a capacity of 113 SR but serves 129 SR. Consequently, overcapacity has occurred, necessitating development through the construction and upgrading of the Pramuka Island SPALD.
The construction and upgrading of the SPALD on Pramuka Island is also expected to serve as a domestic wastewater treatment facility, operating more efficiently whilst maintaining ecological function and taking into account local environmental and community conditions.
Pramono is confident that the SPALD upgrade will improve environmental quality and residents’ health, reduce marine pollution and odour problems, support clean and sustainable tourism, and serve as a prototype for integrated SPALD management across the Thousand Islands region.
