The Jakarta Provincial Government has increased its bus fleet for the 2026 free mudik programme following registration numbers that surpassed initial forecasts. The programme, facilitated by the local government, is scheduled to commence departures on 17 March 2026 from the National Monument (Monas) area.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the number of registered homegoers increased from the initial projection of 26,000 people to more than 30,000 people. “The number of mudik participants has increased. We initially estimated 26,000, but due to high enthusiasm, the figure has risen to 30,774,” said Pramono at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

According to Pramono, the increase in participants prompted the local government to add more buses to the fleet. “We have added buses, bringing the total to 709 buses from the previous 660 or 670,” he said.

The free mudik programme is administered by the Jakarta Transportation Department to assist residents wishing to return to their hometowns ahead of Eid al-Fitr. In addition to providing buses for passengers, the local government also arranges trucks to transport motorcycles belonging to mudik participants to their destination cities.

Registration for the 2026 Jakarta Free Mudik programme was conducted online through the official website mudikgratis.jakarta.go.id, which opened on 22 February 2026. Through this programme, residents can register themselves and family members and transport motorcycles on trucks provided by the government.

The Jakarta Provincial Government regularly organises the free mudik programme annually ahead of Lebaran to reduce vehicle congestion on roads and enhance traveller safety during the homecoming period. This year, departures are scheduled to begin from the Monas area on 17 March 2026.

The provincial government has also launched a new initiative called “Mudik to Jakarta”, designed to attract tourists who are not returning to their hometowns to spend the Lebaran holiday in the capital city. “The main tagline is ‘Jakarta Quieter, Holiday and Shopping Fun, Profits Coming’,” said Pramono.

According to him, the local government believes that the Lebaran mudik flow will remain high, meaning Jakarta will be less congested during this period. This situation is considered an opportunity for the tourism and trading sectors in the capital.

Several shopping centres in Jakarta, according to Pramono, will offer discounts during Ramadan and ahead of Lebaran. Discounts on offer range from 70 to 80 per cent through the Ramadan Sale programme, which runs from 4 March to 31 March 2026.
