Jakarta — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has stated that education is the key for Jakarta residents to achieve prosperity and break free from economic hardship and the cycle of poverty.

“I am convinced we can break the cycle of misfortune for these people through access to quality education,” Pramono Anung said in Jakarta on Sunday.

He noted that the Jakarta Provincial Government remains committed to supporting disadvantaged residents, particularly by expanding educational access.

One such initiative is the Jakarta Smart Card (Kartu Jakarta Pintar, or KJP) programme, which is provided to low-income residents to enable them to access education.

“We have allocated 1.6 trillion rupiah from our regional budget to help residents access education from primary school through upper secondary school,” he said.

He stated that 707,513 students have already benefited from the KJP programme.

He called on residents who have not yet received the KJP to register promptly by meeting the specified requirements.

Additionally, the Jakarta Provincial Government is implementing a free private school programme for Jakarta residents. In the initial phase, 40 private schools have been made tuition-free. By 2026, this number will expand to 63 additional schools, bringing the total to 103 free private schools.

Furthermore, there is the Jakarta Outstanding Student Card (Kartu Jakarta Mahasiswa Unggul, or KJMU) programme, which is provided to disadvantaged residents to access higher education.

“Card recipients will receive educational funding for university studies, not only at undergraduate level but also for master’s and doctoral degrees,” he said.

The provincial government is also developing scholarship programmes similar to the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), which will be provided to disadvantaged residents to study abroad.

“Children from poor families will be able to study overseas funded by the Jakarta Provincial Government, and this can improve their family’s economic circumstances,” he said.

The Jakarta Provincial Government continues to implement a diploma certification programme for disadvantaged residents whose educational certificates are held by their schools. This initiative aims to enable them to utilise their diplomas for further education or employment.

He emphasised that the Jakarta Provincial Government will continue to strengthen the education sector to enable disadvantaged residents to improve their welfare through expanded educational access.
