Pramono Clarifies 'Return to Jakarta' Initiative: Not an Appeal for Rural Migration
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has clarified information regarding the ‘Return to Jakarta’ (Mudik ke Jakarta) programme, which had generated considerable discussion. Pramono emphasised that the programme is not an invitation for residents from other regions to move to Jakarta.
“On this occasion, I also wish to clarify several reports regarding ‘return to Jakarta’. This does not mean we are hoping that rural residents will come to Jakarta,” said Pramono on Pari Island, Thousand Islands, Friday (13 March 2026).
Pramono stated that Jakarta remains open to visitors from anywhere. However, the programme is primarily intended to provide activities and services for residents who remain in the capital during the Eid holiday.
“Jakarta this time is providing space for anyone to enjoy Jakarta when Jakarta is quiet,” he said.
He noted that the number of residents departing for the holiday this year is expected to be similar to previous years. Consequently, the Jakarta provincial government has prepared several programmes to keep the city active during the Eid holiday break.
These include offering discounts at various tourist attractions and various entertainment programmes for residents. Additionally, the Jakarta provincial government plans to provide free public transportation for two consecutive days during the Eid holiday break.
“Including what I have already decided is transportation—for two consecutive days we will provide free all public transportation or public services using the transportation available in Jakarta,” he explained.
Pramono hopes these various programmes can provide alternative activities for residents who do not travel for the holiday as well as tourists who wish to enjoy Jakarta’s atmosphere during the Eid break.
