JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that he directly telephoned the Head of the Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol PP) after a video of a meatball vendor being extorted by a thug in the Tanah Abang area, Central Jakarta, went viral on social media. He emphasised that the perpetrator would be dealt with promptly as part of the government’s quick response to security disturbances in the capital. “At that time, I immediately telephoned the Head of the Satpol PP to take action,” Pramono said at Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, on Saturday (11/4/2026). “And the one who extorted, who smashed the bowls, was immediately arrested and detained,” he continued. This explanation was given when he was asked for an evaluation regarding the incident of the meatball vendor being extorted by a thug in Tanah Abang. He also mentioned that the incident occurred just after Jakarta had received the title of the second safest city in Southeast Asia. According to him, this achievement came from an international survey. “Indeed, Jakarta has usually ranked between 5, 6, 7, now number two, we are grateful for that,” Pramono stated. “A city with more than 11 million residents, and with its agglomeration nearly 42 million according to the UN, naturally it can’t be completely calm with nothing happening,” he explained. Pramono assessed that Jakarta has various dynamics, including in terms of security. Therefore, the government will act firmly against any disturbances to public order. “Things like that will certainly be dealt with firmly by us immediately,” Pramono added. While delivering a speech at the opening of “Lebaran Betawi 2026” at Lapangan Banteng, Pramono also said that Jakarta had never previously been the second safest city in Southeast Asia. “That (Jakarta’s ranking) could not have been achieved without togetherness, harmony, maintaining relations, and unity that we uphold together,” Pramono added. Previously, a video showing a thug smashing the bowls of a meatball vendor in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, went viral on social media on Friday (9/4/2026).
