Pramono bans new padel courts in residential areas of Jakarta
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has banned the construction of padel courts in residential areas to prevent disruption to the daily activities of local residents.
However, the regulation applies only to newly planned padel courts.
“It has been decided that new permits for the construction of padel courts will not be allowed in residential zones — they must all be in commercial zones. This applies to new facilities,” Pramono said at City Hall in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He made the statement after holding a limited meeting with his administration to discuss padel regulations in Jakarta.
Meanwhile, for padel courts already situated in residential areas that hold valid Building Approval Certificates (PBG), Pramono instructed his subordinates, including mayors and sub-district heads, to negotiate with the owners.
Pramono requested that permitted padel courts in residential areas operate no later than 8pm Western Indonesian Time to avoid disturbing the community.
“Therefore, all padel courts in residential areas, even those that have already obtained PBG permits, must close by 8pm at the latest,” Pramono stressed.
Previously, Pramono had indicated he would restrict the operating hours of padel courts, particularly those located in the midst of residential neighbourhoods.
According to him, the sport — which has become a favourite pastime for many Jakartans — must be practised with a sense of tolerance. The presence of padel courts should not disrupt the daily lives of residents, as that would be unfair to the local community.
“There are even cases where a one-and-a-half-year-old baby cannot sleep because people are still shouting while playing padel late at night. In my view, that is simply not fair,” Pramono said.
