Jakarta, CNN Indonesia – The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government officially opened the Jakarta Lunar New Year Festival 2026 series at the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout area on Friday (2/13). The celebration was held as an affirmation of Jakarta’s identity as a global city that is inclusive and a home for all segments of society.

DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung emphasized that the festival is not merely a ceremonial celebration but a symbol that Jakarta is a city open to all religions and ethnicities recognized by the government. Pramono said the celebration serves as tangible proof of equality in the capital.

“Jakarta will be an inclusive city, a global city, a city for everyone, for all religions recognized by the government,” Pramono said at the HI Roundabout area in Central Jakarta on Thursday (2/13). “Including, of course, celebrating Lunar New Year here in Jakarta,” he added.

Furthermore, Pramono highlighted the significant contributions of Chinese Indonesians in shaping Jakarta’s culture, particularly through acculturation with Betawi culture that has created vibrant traditions.

“Thus, the acculturation that has taken place in Jakarta serves as one example that Jakarta is truly a colorful city,” Pramono said. “And that is evident in its traditions, culture, and so on,” he added.

The Jakarta Lunar New Year Festival 2026 is being held at the HI Roundabout area and various locations across Jakarta, starting today through February 17. On the first day, hundreds of lanterns were neatly installed to decorate the HI Roundabout area, adding to the festive city atmosphere.

The Jakarta Lunar New Year Festival series will feature various activities, including the Jakarta Lunar New Year Decoration Competition (February 13–17), the Jakarta Chinatown Festival (February 15–17) at the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII) pavilion, Harmoni Jakarta powered by Jakarta City Branding (February 15–17) at Blok M Hub, and video mapping at the National Monument (Monas). There will also be the Jakarta Light Festival Chinese New Year Edition (February 16–17) in Old Town Jakarta, the Jakarta Temple Festival, culminating in the Cap Go Meh celebration in the Glodok Chinatown area on March 3.
