Prabowo: We Might Not Need to Import Fuel at All in 2-3 Years
President Prabowo Subianto stated that the government will close several Diesel Power Plants (PLTD) in line with its policy to accelerate the transition to clean energy. He said the closure of these PLTDs will save on fuel imports and could even shut off the import tap in the coming years.
Prabowo made this statement while inaugurating the first electric-based commercial vehicle assembly facility in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday (9/4/2026).
Prabowo initially said he will produce electric sedans on a large scale in 2028. He targeted the construction of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) with a capacity of 100 gigawatts within two years.
“We are also forming a company to produce sedans, electric sedans. So, brothers and sisters, I have decided and we will implement the 100 gigawatt electrification programme. We hope to achieve 100 gigawatts in two years. Then, there will be no more power plants using diesel, using solar oil, no,” said Prabowo.
Prabowo said the closure of PLN’s PLTDs will also be carried out. This step will save fuel use and could stop fuel imports.
“With that, we will close 13 diesel power plants, which PLN will close. From closing them, we will save 200 thousand barrels per day. We still need to import 1 million barrels per day now,” he said.
“By closing the PLTDs, we will save 20% directly. And with the 100 gigawatts later, we will also save very significantly. Maybe in 2-3 years, we won’t need to import fuel at all,” he added.
