Prabowo tasks universities with developing alternatives to LPG

Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has asked universities to develop technologies and find alternatives in reducing the reliance on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) amid rising import dependence and global price pressures.
Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto on Monday said the instruction was delivered during a cabinet brief led by President Subianto at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta.
“Several alternatives to reduce LPG are being explored, but as in educational level, we are supporting the minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) on the technology side,” Yuliarto said after the meeting.
It is a crucial attempt in reducing the consumption of LPG by developing technology as well as finding alternatives, as Indonesia remains heavily dependent on imports.

In addition, the global energy prices continues to rise due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.
“LPG dependence on imports is very high and its prices are also increasing,” he said.
Yuliarto mentioned several potential alternative energy sources have been identified, though further details will be outlined by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia.
Universities have been tasked with conducting research to support the ESDM ministry’s efforts in identifying and developing viable energy alternatives.
“Campuses were asked to explore other sources. There are several very potential ones, but we will conduct research to support the ESDM minister,” Yuliarto said.
