Bisnis.com, JAKARTA — President Prabowo Subianto is undertaking an official visit to Tokyo, Japan, to discuss various potential areas of cooperation, including in the technology and digital sectors.

In his first official visit to the Land of the Rising Sun, Prabowo is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The state delegation, accompanied by the Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid along with members of the Red and White Cabinet, landed at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on Sunday evening (29/3/2026) at 19:10 local time.

Menkomdigi Meutya Hafid stated that this visit will address several strategic matters. Moreover, it is hoped that Japanese investment in Indonesia will increase through this visit.

“This presidential visit will focus on discussing strategic issues between the two countries, including cooperation in the fields of technology and digital,” said Meutya in her official statement on Monday (30/3/2026).

In addition to paying a courtesy call on Emperor Naruhito of Japan, Prabowo’s agenda in Tokyo is laden with macroeconomic content.

The former Kopassus Deputy Commander is scheduled to meet with several CEOs of Japanese mega-corporations to witness the signing of several strategic investment agreements.

This step is seen as an effort by the government to ensure that Indonesia not only serves as a market for Japanese technology products but also becomes a production partner through incoming investments.

For context, cooperation between Indonesia and Japan in the technology and digital sectors is not new. The two have previously collaborated on developing AI technology up to high-speed wireless internet.

In November 2025, Indonesia and Japan signed an agreement on the use of the 1.4 GHz frequency to provide more affordable high-speed internet. This technology is used to expand internet coverage in areas difficult to reach with fibre optic cables (remote regions) through fixed wireless access (FWA) services.

Japan has also provided technical support and investment in strengthening Indonesia’s digital economic ecosystem, including data protection and cybersecurity.

Furthermore, the two countries have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the utilisation of AI technology, focusing on economic growth and ethics.
