Prabowo Targets Indonesia to Eliminate Fuel Imports Within Three Years
President Prabowo Subianto is confident that Indonesia will not import fuel or BBM within the next three years. Prabowo conveyed this during the inauguration of the electric commercial vehicle assembly plant owned by PT VKTR Sakti Industries in Magelang, Central Java. Prabowo set this target alongside plans to transition from fossil fuels to new renewable energy. “Perhaps in two to three years, we won’t need to import BBM at all. We have great strength. We are serious; we will be independent, strong, and stand on our own feet,” said Prabowo on Thursday, 9 April 2026, as broadcast via the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel. To reduce reliance on BBM and ensure national energy independence, Prabowo targets the construction of solar power plants (PLTS) with a capacity of 100 gigawatts within two years. The government previously also promoted energy transition through the development of new renewable energy to curb imports and strengthen national energy resilience. This electrification step is accompanied by plans to close 13 diesel power plants (PLTD) owned by PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) or PLN. “Later, there will be no more power plants using diesel or solar. No,” said Prabowo. According to the former Minister of Defence, closing the PLTD will have a significant impact on national energy savings. Prabowo claimed that this step could reduce consumption by up to 200 thousand barrels of oil per day or save up to 20 per cent of BBM imports. “We still need to import one million barrels per day right now. By closing the PLTD, we directly save 20 per cent,” he stated.
