Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Sugiono, formally conveyed a message of condolence from President Prabowo Subianto on the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The condolence letter was delivered to Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Boroujerdi during a meeting in Jakarta, with Sugiono noting Indonesia’s deepest sympathies.

In the meeting, Sugiono and Ambassador Boroujerdi discussed the escalation of tensions in the Middle East following the US-Israel attacks on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent retaliatory strikes. Sugiono underscored the importance of upholding international law and the United Nations Charter, and urged that diplomatic steps be taken promptly to defuse tensions.

Previously, on 28 February, the United States and Israel conducted a series of strikes against targets in Iran, including Tehran, with reported casualties. Iran’s response included ballistic missile attacks against Israel and US military facilities in the region. The escalation occurred amid ongoing nuclear talks in Geneva mediated by Oman.

Responding to these developments, the Indonesian government called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and said it stood ready to facilitate dialogue to restore regional stability. In a statement from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, 3 March, Sugiono said he also spoke by telephone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, discussing the regional escalation and Indonesia’s willingness to mediate between the parties involved.

Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia told the President’s office that the energy security and staple goods price situation were among the issues raised in the report. Former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda noted that President Prabowo Subianto would consider Indonesia’s position in the Board of Peace (BOP).
