Prabowo Speaks Frankly on Board of Peace: Exit if Not Aligned, No Commitment to Pay Dues
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto has spoken frankly about Indonesia’s membership in the Board of Peace, initiated by United States President Donald Trump.
Prabowo firmly stated that Indonesia will exit the Board of Peace if it proves counterproductive, and Indonesia has never promised to pay dues.
Prabowo said that Indonesia’s goal in joining the Board of Peace is to advocate for Palestinian independence.
Therefore, Indonesia will not hesitate to withdraw from the BoP if its decisions do not align with Indonesia’s or Palestine’s interests.
Prabowo even emphasised that Indonesia could leave the Board of Peace without needing to consult with other majority-Muslim countries first.
Additionally, President Prabowo stressed that Indonesia never promised to contribute USD 1 billion to the Board of Peace.
“So, we never said that we wanted to join with a USD 1 billion contribution,” Prabowo said during the same discussion.
The head of state emphasised that the government never committed any funds to the United States when joining the BoP.
According to him, this is evident from Indonesia’s absence at the founding donors’ meeting on 19 February.
“No, never. The meeting in Washington on 19 February was the founding donors’ meeting. They each contributed, some perhaps more. But Indonesia was not there. Because from the start, when asked, I did not commit to any money at all,” Prabowo said.
Indonesia is said to have only expressed readiness to provide peacekeeping troops to protect Gaza residents.
“We stated our readiness to send peacekeeping troops as needed,” Prabowo said.
