Prabowo Slams 'Green-Brown' Uniforms as Backers of Lawbreakers
President Prabowo Subianto has highlighted the behaviour of state apparatus in Indonesia that often protects perpetrators of law violations. He cited officers in green and brown uniforms, the colours associated with the army and police, who act as backers of those who plunder the nation’s wealth.
The Gerindra Party chairman delivered these remarks during a plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday, 20 May 2026. In the speech, Prabowo said corrupt individuals generally have protectors within the apparatus.
“These people usually have backers. The backer is typically their uniform; if not green, then brown,” Prabowo said while addressing the MPR/DPR/DPD complex in Jakarta.
Prabowo, who is also a retired Army general, said he does not want the situation to continue. He added that he would not hesitate to root out rogue officers. “As a senior, as an alumnus, I will not hesitate,” he stated.
The former Defence Minister told that soldiers and police should not tarnish the good name of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian Police (Polri). “Do not tarnish the TNI-Polri. The TNI-Polri belong to the people and must fight for the people,” Prabowo noted.
He said the Indonesian people are not stupid. The public, according to Prabowo, can tell if there are officials assisting lawbreakers.
Prabowo also endorsed the public documenting improper behaviour by officials and reporting it to the President. “If there is improper conduct by officials, I want the people to video,” he stated.
Prabowo attended this DPR plenary session to present the macroeconomic framework and the main fiscal policy (KEM-PPKF). He became the first president to deliver the KEM-PPKF directly to Parliament.
In his speech, Prabowo targeted the rupiah at around Rp 16,800-17,500 per US dollar in the 2027 budget year under the KEM-PPKF. “Our fiscal and monetary strategy must be capable of keeping our exchange rate stable against world currencies,” he said.
From the fiscal stance, the government plans a 2027 budget deficit of around 1.8 to a maximum of 2.4 percent of GDP. This figure represents a strong government commitment to continue to curb and reduce the budget deficit, given that the 2025 budget deficit reached 2.92 percent or 0.8 percentage points below the 3 percent maximum.
Chairman of Commission XI DPR, Mukhamad Misbakhun, stated that typically the macroeconomic framework and the main fiscal policy are conveyed by the Finance Minister on behalf of the President. “Today, it was read directly by the President, which marks a new tradition,” he said at the DPR complex in Senayan, on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
