Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to visit Moscow, Russia, again this week to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Foreign Minister Sugiono, who will accompany President Prabowo to Moscow, explained that this visit is strategic for Indonesia’s national interests. “He departs this week. […] This is something that is very strategic for the Indonesian nation. He will meet with President Putin,” said Foreign Minister Sugiono in response to journalists’ questions after attending the opening of the National Deliberation of the PB IPSI in Jakarta on Saturday. However, Sugiono did not specify the exact departure date, whether Saturday night or Sunday (12/4). On the same occasion, Sugiono explained that in his meeting with President Putin, President Prabowo will discuss current geopolitical issues as well as energy-related matters. “Certainly, discussing the energy situation,” said Sugiono. President Prabowo’s visit to Russia will be his third, following his second visit to Moscow on 10 December 2025, and his first visit to Saint Petersburg on 18-20 June 2025. As president-elect, President Prabowo also met with President Putin in Moscow in July 2024. In the first and second visits, cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector was highlighted. At that time, Indonesia and Russia agreed to collaborate in new and renewable energy, as well as nuclear technology development. President Putin expressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with Indonesia in peaceful nuclear energy. In recent months, particularly after the war broke out in the Gulf region and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz disrupting global crude oil distribution, President Prabowo has visited several countries, namely Japan and South Korea, to anticipate the impact of a potential global oil crisis on Indonesia. “They say Prabowo is travelling abroad, likes travelling abroad. Brothers and sisters, to secure oil, I have to go everywhere,” said President Prabowo during a government working meeting at the Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4). The President emphasised that amid the turbulent global geopolitical situation, the government needs to actively establish communication and cooperation with various countries to maintain national economic stability, particularly in the energy sector. In the same meeting, the President stated that he would travel abroad again to carry out a similar mission. “I want to depart again to a certain country. Once I depart, you’ll know where. To secure (oil) as well,” said President Prabowo, signalling his agenda for the visit to Russia during the meeting with ministers and echelon I officials.
