Prabowo Said to Be Ready to Review Indonesia's Membership of the BoP After Israel's Attack on Iran
Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto is said to be weighing and prepared to review Indonesia’s membership in the Board of Peace (BoP) in light of Israeli and United States strikes on Iran since the weekend. The remarks were made during a meeting at Istana Merdeka in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, 3 March 2026, with former presidents and vice-presidents, a former foreign minister, the general chairman of a political party, and other ministers from the Kabinet Merah Putih.
‘Yes (the President stated he is ready to evaluate), with the latest developments, it indeed must be evaluated,’ said Hassan Wirajuda, the former foreign minister, after the 3.5-hour meeting on Tuesday night.
Hassan noted that the Head of State also discussed BoP’s fate following the attack. ‘We discussed BoP, but also in the context of current developments, whether the war raging in Iran will weaken—perhaps weaken—the position and mandate of BoP? We will recalibrate from that angle,’ he said.
BoP was formed to create and build peace in the region. Its mission is to facilitate ceasefires, ease humanitarian access, and carry out rehabilitation and reconstruction.
‘The potential for its success could be reduced. We will assess whether, as a result, we will continue to meet our obligations. Secondly, the deployment of troops, where we are among the largest contributors, we will reassess,’ he added.
Hassan further stated that the Israeli attack on Iran gives the impression of BoP’s declining credibility. President Prabowo, he said, even discussed the issue when he spoke by phone with other leaders, including Gulf states.
Hassan also revealed that President Prabowo did not ignore public calls for Indonesia to withdraw from BoP. Withdrawal from membership was among the options discussed if the Board of Peace does not carry out its mission.
‘That was discussed; the war currently taking place has the potential to weaken BoP’s chances of success. The President said we will assess to what extent BoP will continue to carry out its mission. If not, we will withdraw; that is very clear and he does not hide it,’ Hassan stated.
The former foreign minister under Presidents Megawati Sukarnoputri and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono noted that Indonesia’s troop deployment would be undertaken after assessing BoP’s effectiveness. ‘He spoke of troop deployment. It depends on BoP’s effectiveness; because our contribution is also the largest — in terms of our votes that could decide if there are 300 personnel involved, that would be very significant,’ Hassan said.
