JAKARTA — President Prabowo Subianto is reportedly reluctant to make a hasty decision to pull Indonesia out of its membership of the Board of Peace (BoP) in the wake of the Middle East conflict, after Israel and the United States attacked Iran.

Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister Nusron Wahid wants to first test BoP as a means of negotiating peace, at a time when there is no other strategic forum to discuss the issue.

‘The President’s position is that Indonesia has accepted BoP as a vehicle, as an effort towards peace. At least, we should try this effort first. We should not have to withdraw before we have tried,’ Nusron said after a meeting with Prabowo and Islamic scholars at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Thursday (5 March 2026).

The head of state, Nusron said, asked how Indonesia could contribute to world peace if there is no specific forum to participate in.

‘The President questions: if there are those who urge us to withdraw from BoP, then we would negotiate in order to create peace, in which arena? In what forum? Because the only forum today for peacemaking talks on Palestine and Gaza is BoP,’ Nusron said.

‘Therefore, Indonesia, with eight other countries, has agreed to that approach,’ he added.

The option will be considered carefully while monitoring the situation.

‘The government is not anti-criticism. We listen while watching the situation, but we will prove on the ground that this diplomacy is the best way to create peace. Not through war,’ Nusron said.

The push comes after the US, along with Israel, attacked Iran on Saturday (28 February 2026), killing several senior Iranian figures, including the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The attack on Iran is viewed as proof that the Trump-created institution is merely ‘nonsense’, a diplomatic veneer that does not align with the peace commitment in reality.

In fact, the body was initially introduced by Trump as a counterpoint to the UN Security Council, which he viewed as ineffective, with an ambitious mission to foster global stability and oversee reconstruction in conflict areas such as Gaza.
