Prabowo Pledges to Streamline Operations for Two Japanese Power Plants in Indonesia
President Prabowo Subianto has pledged to accelerate bureaucracy for Japanese green energy projects in Indonesia. This was stated by Prabowo during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the Akasaka Palace in Tokyo on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.
According to Prabowo, Indonesia views the strengthening of the Asia Zero Emission Community initiative as very important. Indonesia will facilitate the involvement of Japanese companies.
He mentioned several projects whose bureaucratic processes will be expedited, for example, the Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) project and the Legok Nangka Waste-to-Energy Power Plant (PLTSa) project.
“We will also promote the Asia Zero Emission Community where Japanese companies are involved in Indonesia, and we will accelerate and assist in debottlenecking existing projects, for example Legok Nangka and Sarulla,” Prabowo stated in a written statement, quoted on Wednesday (1/4/2026).
Furthermore, Prabowo welcomed the investment by Japanese company Inpex Corporation in the perpetual gas project of the Masela Block. Prabowo hopes that the project can be realised soon after experiencing quite a long delay.
Prabowo also opened wide opportunities for Japanese participation in building industry through the downstreaming programme. Indonesia is also encouraging cooperation in the development of renewable energy and nuclear energy as part of the future energy transition.
“We continue to invite and open ourselves to Japanese participation in Indonesia’s economy as well as partnership cooperation in the field of critical minerals and rare earth, and we invite Japan to participate in Indonesia’s industrialisation with downstreaming,” said Prabowo.
