Prabowo: Our Energy Transition is Progressing at Full Speed!
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto highlighted the issue of energy resilience as a major urgent challenge to be addressed collectively at the Special High-Level Conference (SHLC) of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The conference formed part of the 48th ASEAN Summit series in Cebu, Philippines, on Thursday (7/5/2026).
“Energy resilience is one of the important issues we are facing at the moment. With increasing global pressures and instability in the Middle East, this is no longer a long-term problem, but an urgent one,” said Prabowo.
The Head of State conveyed that the BIMP-EAGA region has great potential in developing renewable energy, from hydropower, solar power, wind power, to fertile land that has not yet been optimally utilised.
Furthermore, Prabowo questioned the readiness of member countries to utilise that potential to meet the region’s needs while supporting ASEAN’s energy transition.
“The question is whether we are ready to act based on that potential. Not only to meet our subregional needs, but also to contribute to ASEAN’s energy transition,” he said.
On that occasion, Prabowo also encouraged concrete steps to accelerate the development of clean energy in the region. Some highlighted steps include the development of hydropower in Borneo, expansion of solar energy projects in Palawan, and utilisation of wind energy in coastal areas.
Prabowo exemplified several steps being implemented in Indonesia to accelerate the development of solar energy.
“Our energy transition is progressing at full speed. We are building 100 GW of solar power. Together, we enhance our energy infrastructure. BIMP-EAGA has great potential,” stated the President.
In addition to energy development, Prabowo emphasised the importance of strengthening subregional connectivity, including increasing the capacity of the Trans Borneo Power Grid electricity network so that energy distribution can run more efficiently in the region. The Head of State assessed that all these agendas require financing support, technical expertise, and closer partnerships with regional development partners.
“All of this will not happen without the right support. We need to secure funding, mobilise technical expertise, and deepen partnerships with our regional advisors and Development Partners,” he said.
Concluding his speech, the Chairman General of the Greater Indonesia Movement Party affirmed that besides energy resilience, food resilience is also a fundamental issue that must be a joint concern for BIMP-EAGA countries in maintaining the welfare of the region’s communities.
