President Prabowo Subianto intends to renovate Gambir Railway Station in Central Jakarta. Prabowo has instructed Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi and President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Bobby Rasyidin to begin discussing the plan. Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya conveyed that Prabowo gave the instruction during a meeting with Dudy and Bobby at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta last Thursday. “Gambir Station will be renovated into a more modern strategic transport node,” Teddy said in his statement, cited on Sunday, 14 June 2026. According to Teddy, the renovation of the station, located in the National Monument (Monas) area, is targeted for completion within two years. Gambir Station will be designed to have better intermodal integration, including direct integration with KRL commuter line services. Beyond the Gambir Station renovation, Prabowo also requested the Ministry of Transportation and PT KAI to resolve safety issues at level crossings. “The safety of train journeys and road users is a priority,” Teddy stated. Currently, 172 level crossings have been closed, 490 are in the process of being addressed, and the remaining 1,148 have begun to be fitted with crossing barriers. The Greater Jakarta area (Jabodetabek) is the primary focus with the highest number of interventions. Teddy said President Prabowo’s directive is part of the government’s effort to build a public transportation system that is increasingly modern, connected, and meets high safety standards. “Through the development of strategic infrastructure and the acceleration of handling vulnerable points, the government is striving to deliver transportation services that are safer and more comfortable, as well as capable of supporting economic growth and public mobility in the future,” he stated. Furthermore, the Ministry of Transportation also reported on the progress of the national railway network development. According to Minister Dudy, there are currently around 6,927 kilometres of active railway lines across Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Papua. The government is targeting the construction of 10,524 kilometres of railway lines, including in urban areas.
