Prabowo Orders French Language Lessons in Indonesian Schools
President Prabowo Subianto has instructed all levels of Indonesian schools to include French language lessons. He made the announcement during a speech at his working visit to France on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
Prabowo affirmed that Indonesia and France maintain strong bilateral relations, particularly in defence and science and technology.
“In several aspects, Indonesia and France share similar stances, and our bilateral relations are currently very strong. This is due to the direct support of President Macron. In defence, our cooperation is excellent, and in science and technology collaboration, it is also very strong,” Prabowo stated.
Furthermore, Prabowo said he aims to deepen bilateral ties with France further, including introducing French language lessons in schools.
“In education, we wish to enhance cooperation further. I have now instructed that all Indonesian schools must teach French, in light of future global developments,” he added.
Prabowo recalled Indonesia’s invitation to the Bastille Day parade in July 2025, expressing pride in the diplomatic respect shown by the French government.
“Last year, Indonesia was honoured to participate in the 14 July parade, France’s national day. This is a great honour; perhaps we are the first Asian country to march in Europe,” Prabowo said.
The participation of Indonesian troops in the Bastille Day parade was seen as recognition of Indonesia’s strategic international position.
The physical presence of Indonesian soldiers at one of Europe’s most historic ceremonies marked a significant milestone in Indonesia’s defence diplomacy.
He reiterated Indonesia’s strong ties with France and praised President Macron’s firm stance on the international stage.
“President Macron’s leadership on the global stage is evident in his willingness to take positive, firm positions in line with the principles of the French Republic,” he concluded.
