JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Prabowo Subianto has invited Japan to collaborate in the development of renewable energy and nuclear energy.

This invitation was conveyed by Prabowo in the presence of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during a joint press statement at Akasaka Palace, Tokyo, Japan, on Monday (31/3/2026).

“We are also open to cooperation in the fields of renewable energy and nuclear energy,” Prabowo stated, as quoted from the YouTube broadcast of the Presidential Secretariat, Tuesday (31/3/2026).

In addition, the Head of State also invited Japan to collaborate in the development of rare earth metals and critical minerals.

“We also invite Japan to join together in cooperative collaboration in all fields, including those I mentioned earlier: education, tourism, and people-to-people programmes,” he explained.

Furthermore, Prabowo welcomed the cooperation in developing the perennial gas field in the Masela Block, whose agreement was signed on Monday (30/3/2026).

It is known that the basic value of the project development (DPOD) reaches approximately $20 billion, with an additional approximately $1 billion for carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to make it more environmentally friendly.

Previously reported, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that the Masela Block has now achieved significant certainty after a long process spanning decades following the signing of the cooperation contract.

At least, the development of the Masela Block is one of 10 memorandums of understanding (MoU) and strategic cooperation agreements between Indonesian and Japanese business actors that were signed on Monday.

“Following the direction of the President in 2025, we conducted intensive meetings and alhamdulillah it is complete, the total project is $20.9 billion because it adds CCS $1 billion, the DPOD is $20 billion. But with the current geopolitical developments, it is likely to increase. So the total investment for us is approximately more than 300 trillion (rupiah),” Bahlil stated after the meeting on Monday.
