Prabowo Discusses the US-Iran Conflict with Former Presidents and the Foreign Minister
President Prabowo Subianto briefed attendees on the latest developments in the escalation of the conflict in the Gulf region, addressing the president, vice president, former foreign ministers, and the leaders of political parties represented in parliament. Former foreign minister Noer Hassan Wirajuda disclosed this after attending a closed meeting at Istana Merdeka on Tuesday night, 3 March 2026. ‘Specifically, in relation to what has long concerned many of us, namely the most recent developments of the war or attack by America and Israel against Iran,’ said Hassan at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday. The head of state, he said, explicitly highlighted the implications of the US-Israel conflict with Iran for Indonesia and the global order. ‘When the global order is no longer effective and there is no longer any recourse for a country that is the victim of military aggression to appeal to anyone,’ he said. ‘And there is indeed no coercive power, especially when it concerns the great powers.’ This situation, according to Hassan, is a dilemma not only for Indonesia but for other nations as well. Therefore, Prabowo considers it important to communicate the problems faced to the national figures present. According to Hassan, Prabowo also discussed the economic implications of the war waged by the US-Israel against Iran. ‘The potential effects of this war on the global economy, particularly regarding supply, oil, and gas, are being calculated in terms of its impact on us,’ Hassan said. The former foreign minister (2001-2009) noted that Prabowo also discussed calculations of how long the war might last. ‘Earlier, US President Donald Trump talked in terms of days, but now the discussion is in weeks,’ he said. Furthermore, Prabowo and the figures also discussed Indonesia’s membership in the Board of Peace, i.e., the Peace Council. ‘We discussed this, but also in the context of the latest developments, whether the war raging in Iran would weaken our position and mandate in the BoP; we will recalibrate on that,’ Hassan explained. Hassan claimed that Prabowo opened a space for dialogue and invited input from the national figures present. ‘We each tried to contribute thoughts and proposals from the participants,’ he said. President Prabowo invited the president, vice president, and former foreign ministers to the Istana Kepresidenan on Tuesday night. In addition to former state officials, Prabowo also invited the leaders of parliamentary political parties and businesspeople. The closed meeting lasted at the Istana Merdeka in Jakarta for about three and a half hours. Also present were President the 6th Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and President the 7th Joko Widodo. In addition to these former leaders, those present included the 10th and 12th Vice Presidents Jusuf Kalla, the 11th Boediono, and the 13th Ma’ruf Amin. Parliamentary party leaders included Surya Dharma Paloh (NasDem), Zulkifli Hasan (National Mandate Party), Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar (National Awakening Party), and Bahlil Lahadalia (Golkar). Also present were Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY, Democrat) and Al Muzzammil Yusuf (PKS). Also present was Puan Maharani, head of the PDIP’s Central Executive Council, representing Megawati Soekarnoputri. In addition, several Red and White Cabinet ministers attended, including Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, Higher Education, Research and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto, and Education and Culture Minister Abdul Mu’ti. Business figures also attended, including Anindya Bakrie, Shinta Kamdani, and Akbar Himawan Buchari.
