President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has agreed to strengthen the Indonesian National Police Commission (Kompolnas). “The President strongly approves the strengthening of Kompolnas. The Indonesian National Police Commission will be strengthened so that its decisions and recommendations are binding,” said Chairman of the Police Reform Acceleration Committee Jimly Asshidiqie at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5). Jimly stated that in the future, Kompolnas membership will no longer involve ex-officio elements. He said that Kompolnas’s oversight function over the police will become more effective. “Well, it has been decided that this will be submitted in the law preparation process, and there is already a draft law ready to be discussed in the DPR,” he said. At the same time, KPRP member Yusril Ihza Mahendra conveyed that Kompolnas’s authority will be expanded in the future. He stated that Kompolnas’s decisions are binding, so the Chief of Police must implement them. “And that was also conveyed earlier: the task for Mr Minister of Law and Human Rights, Mr Supratman, our collective task to draft it, and then it will be submitted to the DPR as an amendment to the existing Police Law, specifically several articles related to Kompolnas,” he said. At the same time, Jimly mentioned that these recommendations will revise up to eight Police Regulations and 24 Chief of Police Regulations. Jimly said that all adjustments will be completed by 2029.
