Prabowo Agrees Polri Will Not Be Under Any Ministry, Here’s Why
Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has agreed with several recommendations from the Committee for Accelerating Police Reform. One of them concerns the position of Polri remaining under the President.
This was stated by Member of the Police Reform Commission, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, after reporting the results of their recommendations to Prabowo at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.
“We have reported the results of the committee’s work to the President, and the President has received the report well. All that was conveyed has been agreed upon by the President regarding the alternative mentioned earlier,” said Yusril.
Yusril emphasised that the position of Polri has been jointly agreed with President Prabowo that it will not be under any ministry.
“Regarding the position of Polri, it remains as it is now. Polri is directly under the President, and no Ministry of Security or Ministry of Police will be formed, nor will the police be placed under an existing ministry. Instead, Polri remains directly under the President,” he explained.
In addition, Yusril mentioned that the appointment of the National Police Chief will still go through the DPR approval mechanism.
“The President has chosen to follow what is currently in place, namely that he will propose a candidate for National Police Chief to the DPR for approval, and only then will he appoint the proposed candidate as National Police Chief,” he said.
Meanwhile, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that he is ready to follow up on the agreed recommendations.
“On principle, Polri will immediately follow up on the proposals that we believe will continue to make the Polri institution better,” he emphasised.
