Prabowo: 70 Percent of East Asia's Trade Passes Through Indonesian Straits, Making Indonesia a Global Focus
JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto discussed the vital importance of the Strait of Hormuz to the world and compared it to Indonesia’s straits, which make the country a global focus of attention.
“Are we aware that the Malacca Strait, Sunda Strait, Makassar Strait, and so on, are Indonesian waters? Are we aware of how important Indonesia is? Are we aware of how crucial Indonesia is?” said Prabowo at the cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
Indonesia’s straits are equally vital to world trade.
“70 percent of the energy for Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, the Philippines,” said Prabowo.
“So, brothers and sisters, we must understand that we are always under the world’s attention,” he said.
Prabowo gathered ministers and officials in this meeting so that Indonesia can be managed well, given its importance in the world economy.
“The purpose of my direction is because of the importance of our role, so we must also lead this nation, control this nation well, accurately, and reliably,” he stated.
Energy supply has become an issue following the outbreak of the Iran versus United States and Israel war, but Indonesia is strong in facing its impacts.
“It turns out that after studying it, we have a sufficiently strong economy,” he said.
