Minister warns of possible electricity crisis in Java
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - State Enterprises Minister Sugiharto said an electricity crisis may happen in Java in the next two years unless new power plants are set up.
"Java will face an electricity crisis if in two years` time we don`t build new electricity generating plants and oil being used in electricity geneerating plants is not replaced by non-oil energy sources," he said on the sidelines of a grand harvest in Subang, West Java.
He said to anticipate the possibility, the government expected to add around 10,000 MW more to the country`s electricity supply from non-oil generated power plants as part of conversion of around 8,900 MW electricity supply from oil-operated plants.
The government, he said, would seek non-oil energy sources to assure continuity of electricity supply in Indonesia especially Java.
"We will exploit gas or coal which are abundant in the country," he said.
The peak of electricity use in the Java-Bali system of electricity supply in 2005 reached 15,830 MW while capacity installed by state electricity company PLN reached 19,615 MW and electricity power that could be distributed reached 18,398MW.
Electricity use in Indonesia grows 6 to 7 percent a year. (*)
