Pornography in the media
Pornography in the media
From Republika
Lembaga Media Ramah Keluarga (Family Friendly Media Center)
and Media Watch and Consumer Center (MWCC) are non-governmental
organizations and have been actively monitoring the mass media.
One of our serious concerns is the spread of pornography in the
mass media.
Based on the results of our latest observations in June 2001,
pornography in the mass media is increasing. Pornography is
forbidden in Indonesia and is categorized as a moral offense in
the Criminal Code; for example, under articles 282, 532 and 533.
In mid-2000, the editor in chief of Matra magazine, N.
Riantiarno, was sentenced to five months in prison and eight
months' probation for publishing the pictures of scantily dressed
women. Unfortunately, endeavors to stamp out pornography have not
been continued by law enforcers, the proof being that offensive
pictures are more easily found in publications.
We urge law enforcers to take action immediately on
publications printing offensive material. We also call on figures
in society, mass organizations, foundations and non-governmental
organizations to take part in monitoring and criticizing
developments in the mass media.
