\nand Media Watch and Consumer Center (MWCC) are non-governmental
\norganizations and have been actively monitoring the mass media.
\nOne of our serious concerns is the spread of pornography in the
\nmass media.<\/p>\n
Based on the results of our latest observations in June 2001,
\npornography in the mass media is increasing. Pornography is
\nforbidden in Indonesia and is categorized as a moral offense in
\nthe Criminal Code; for example, under articles 282, 532 and 533.<\/p>\n
In mid-2000, the editor in chief of Matra magazine, N.
\nRiantiarno, was sentenced to five months in prison and eight
\nmonths' probation for publishing the pictures of scantily dressed
\nwomen. Unfortunately, endeavors to stamp out pornography have not
\nbeen continued by law enforcers, the proof being that offensive
\npictures are more easily found in publications.<\/p>\n
We urge law enforcers to take action immediately on
\npublications printing offensive material. We also call on figures
\nin society, mass organizations, foundations and non-governmental
\norganizations to take part in monitoring and criticizing
\ndevelopments in the mass media.<\/p>\n
