Cimahi, West Java, ranks as one of the most densely populated cities in the province, with 14,000 to 15,000 people per square kilometre. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for West Java, the population of Cimahi City is recorded at 614,000 people in 2026. This density is disproportionate to the city’s area of only 42.43 square kilometres, comprising three districts and fifteen wards. Even Deputy Mayor of Cimahi, Adhitia Yudisthira, stated that the population density in Cimahi City is already equivalent to that of Central Jakarta per square kilometre. “Our population density level today has reached 14,000 people per square kilometre. That means it’s the same as Central Jakarta City, with an area that’s certainly just about that size,” said Adhitia when met on Saturday (25/4/2026). The arrangement and resolution of population density issues must be addressed comprehensively. This is because open land in Cimahi City is becoming increasingly scarce as housing continues to develop. Vertical housing amid land limitations thus becomes the most appropriate concept. “For example, regarding residential areas. We can no longer talk about landed houses, but moving forward, the direction must be vertical houses because we know that land in Cimahi is very limited,” he said. Population density is not only faced with housing problems but also social, economic, and environmental issues. All these problems must certainly be resolved in a continuous manner. The resolution of these issues has already been outlined in the Long-Term Regional Development Plan (RPJPD) of Cimahi City. “This fundamental problem also requires very thorough studies. The point is, we already have the RPJPD, and we just need to make adjustments to this RPJPD moving forward to make it much more suitable, so that Cimahi, even though it is becoming denser, remains livable for its residents,” he explained. The Cimahi City Government is also awaiting revisions to the West Java Provincial Spatial Planning Plan (RTRW), which will subsequently be followed in Cimahi City. “We are waiting for changes in spatial planning at the provincial level, changes to the RTRW at the provincial level, so that we can make better spatial planning adjustments,” said Adhitia.
