I would like to thank you for the extensive coverage in your
columns of the meeting entitled The road to Cairo -- Population,
Sustained Economic Growth and Sustainable Development held in the
United Nations Information Center, Jakarta, on Aug. 23, 1994.
However, in the article published in your edition of Aug. 24,
1994 with the title UN prepares for abortion debate at Cairo
meet, some mistakes have slipped into what I was quoted saying.
I did not say, like it is written in the article, that "more
than 15,000 abortions take place each year in the world and 25 to
30 percent result in the mother's death," but that there are 50
million abortions every year, and that of the 500,000 maternal
deaths that occur worldwide annually, 25 to 33 percent result
from complications of unsafe abortions.
