Police warn violators

JAKARTA: National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Nurfaizi has issued a fresh warning against those attempting to foil the general election.

He said stern action would be taken against those violating the law.

Nurfaizi identified several groups in the community which he said had a tendency to stir up trouble, and might plan to wreak havoc in the coming election campaign and the poll.

"This doesn't mean we're trying to find scapegoats for problems that might occur later," he said.

A total 189,060 police officers would be deployed during the campaign and election period, he said.

The United Development Party has prepared 1,692 speakers for the nationwide campaign, the Golongan Karya 1,090 speakers, and the Indonesian Democratic Party 252 speakers, Nurfaizi said.

"Each police officer will safeguard four voting booths. He will be supported by six civil securities," he said.

As many as 5,000 personnel from City Police headquarters yesterday held the final security drill in preparation for the campaign and poll at the former Kemayoran airport, Central Jakarta. (cst)
