Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation of Metro Jaya Regional Police has uncovered an alleged production and circulation of counterfeit Rp100,000 notes in Bogor, West Java.

“In the bust, one suspect with initials MP was arrested in a hotel room in the Kemang area, Bogor Regency, on Monday (30/3),” said AKBP Robby Syahfery, Head of Sub-Directorate II Ekbank of the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation of Metro Jaya Regional Police, in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Robby explained that in uncovering the case, they managed to seize suspected counterfeit Rp100,000 notes with a total value of around Rp620 million.

He added that besides arresting the alleged perpetrator, several pieces of evidence believed to be used for producing counterfeit money were also confiscated.

“The evidence includes printers, ink, paper cutters, A4 paper, and other equipment related to the counterfeit money production process,” said Robby.

“We are currently conducting further investigations into the counterfeit money syndicate regarding its planners and distribution networks,” he stated.

Metro Jaya Regional Police also urged the public to be more vigilant when receiving cash, especially large denominations.

“Residents are asked to be more thorough and immediately report to the nearest police station or via the 110 service if they find suspected fake money,” he said.

Based on information from Bank Indonesia, the authenticity of Rupiah notes can be easily recognised using the five senses, either visually or by touch.

On Rp100,000 and Rp50,000 notes, the security thread changes colour when viewed from different angles.

When touched, the denomination numbers, words, main image, and the state emblem of the Garuda bird feel rough. There is also a blind code, a specific code for identifying the denomination for the visually impaired, which feels rough to the touch.

When held up to light, there is a watermark in the form of a specific image, usually a national hero, that becomes visible. Additionally, there is a recto-verso image, in the form of the BI logo that appears complete when held up to light.
