JAKARTA — The police will conduct a comprehensive review of vehicle repossession regulations enforced by debt collectors (mata elang) following an assault case involving a lawyer with the initials BST in Kelapa Dua, Tangerang Selatan.

Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto, Head of the Public Relations Division of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, stated that this review is necessary to ensure that vehicle repossession processes are not conducted arbitrarily and do not resemble criminal racketeering.

“There are legal rules and regulations that can be applied by debt collectors. We will review these to ensure they have an effect on financing institutions to be more orderly in issuing authorisations to debt collectors, so that their actions do not appear to be racketeering,” Budi told reporters on Friday (27 February 2026).

The incidents have been reported in Cengkareng (West Jakarta), Kalibata (South Jakarta), Kelapa Dua (South Tangerang), and Depok.

The most recent case occurred in Kelapa Dua, South Tangerang, where three alleged debt collectors attempted to repossess a vehicle belonging to the victim at a gated residential complex. The victim refused and engaged in a heated argument with the perpetrators, who subsequently left the location.

The victim then contacted security personnel to stop the debt collectors’ vehicle and request their identification. However, when the perpetrators returned, the victim was stabbed, and all three suspects fled the scene.

“The victim asked security to stop the debt collector’s vehicle in order to request their identification,” said Andri, a police official.

Budi added that the public can also play a role in handling cases involving debt collectors by uploading documentation of incidents to the Police Tube platform operated by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police.

Through this platform, police can directly monitor public security disturbances and take appropriate action.

“We are grateful for any reports submitted by the public, which serve as education and information for us. We will facilitate this through the platform that has been built by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police called Police Tube for reporting incidents,” Budi stated.

Reports of incidents ranging from traffic accidents, fires, and congestion to criminal activity can serve as monitoring material for law enforcement.
