Police support city's discipline campaign
JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo said
the police will support all city administration measures to
promote the National Discipline Movement in the capital.
"The police have already made a lot of effort to make the
public obey existing rules, such as observing traffic signs,
disposing of litter in the proper place, standing in line in an
orderly manner and adhering to working hours," Widodo said
yesterday, adding that the police completely support the drive to
instill a high sense of discipline among the public.
Earlier on Monday, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja stressed that
the National Discipline Movement drive in Jakarta could ill
afford to meet with failure.
On the same occasion on Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Sutiyoso, the
Chief of Staff of the Jakarta Military District Command, said
that the most important thing is the public's awareness of the
discipline movement.
"But we have to admit that the facilities needed to ensure
public discipline are not adequate. For example, we expect people
to line up at bus stops. How can they queue if the facilities
needed are not provided?" Sutiyoso said.
He added that once the public has a high degree of discipline,
the government will be able to closely supervise and even issue
rulings that would prevent people from behaving against the
discipline movement.
Last Saturday, President Soeharto launched the nationwide
Discipline Campaign during the National Awakening Day to
encourage people to use the Indonesian language correctly and to
observe basic elements of discipline.
The government has always taken the opportunity to instill
patriotism in citizens on National Awakening Day. (31)
